LAZÁRKOVÁ, Simona
The diploma thesis named ´Abstract Tendencies in Czech Art in the 1970s and 80s´ is processed in both, a theoretical and a creative, practical parts. The theoretical part presents abstract tendencies in Czech art during the 1970s and 80s representing the work of artists creating pieces of a ball and a geometrical shape of a circle in both, surface as well as spacial creation. The works of Václav Boštík, Stanislav Kolíbal, Hugo Demartini, Vladimír Škoda and Woody Vasulka are presented and emphasized. The practical part is presented in the form of a graphic creation including a circular theme with a subsequent area solution in gypsum. Everything is accompanied by drawing studies, graphic examinations and gypsum castings of circular objects.
Image, Information, Complexity. The study of visual information incorporating the function of information entropy with a focus on abstract art
Malečková, Dita ; Kera, Denisa (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee) ; Havel, Ivan M. (referee)
This text focuses on the relation of information and image, hence Information Theory and Image Analysis, as well as visualization of information and methods of visual analytics focusing on analysis of art works. It also concentrates on evolution of digital image and related new type of perception and artificial aesthetics. We narrow the broader topic of the image and image information to the abstract art, namely the work of Czech painter Frantisek Kupka, which is used as input in the experiment presenting original method of image analysis using the function of information entropy (Rényi entropy). This approach was used for the first time for analysis of art works with the aim to obtain the comparaison of natural and artificial classification of image information. We chose the work of abstract art not only with regard to given history of grammatics of abstract forms and its relation to the digital image, but also as an emblematic example of effective gaining of information from complex environment. Work thus summarizes historical context of evolution of digital image and theoretical reflection of contemporary image analytics and others techniques relevant to the image information and emphasizes relation of abstract art to the natural and simulated complexity.
Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke, the pioneers of Czech abstract photography
Gromovová, Anna ; Půtová, Barbora (advisor) ; Hoftichová, Petra (referee)
The Bachelor thesis deals with the lives and works of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke, the pioneers of the Czech abstract photography. The introduction of thesis is dedicated to a photography medium and an abstract photography phenomenon. The next part describes both the Czech and international contemporary photographic scene. The stress is put on abstract photography creation. Then the main focus of thesis, i.e. the study dealing with lives and works of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke follows. A special attention is paid to their abstract creation where both photographers counted among pioneers. The following chapter includes the comparison of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke works. Finally, a summary of personalities and abstract works of both avant-garde photographers is made. The thesis also contains a pictorial supplement. The existing monographs and collections of works always concern each author individually. The author of Bachelor thesis has therefore tried to compare the works and fortunes of Jaroslav Rössler and Jaromír Funke in mutual connections and put the creation of both photographers both into national and international context.

Šeda, Petr ; Pech, Milan (advisor) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (referee)
Art magazine Kvart: Collection of poetry and science in the 1930s and 1940s of the 20th century The Abstract of my Bachelor thesis is thorough both formal and content analysis of Kvart periodical, which used to be published in the period of 30s and 40s in Czechoslovakia. Yet there hasn't been any art historical study devoted to it, although it is probably one of the highest-quality periodical publication of that focus in its time in Czechoslovakia. With its contents Kvart used to offer to its readers such topics like Surrealism, Architecture of Functionalism or Modernist Abstract art combined together with high-quality poetry and literature selection. However no forgetting values of the past decades it was connecting them with contemporary texts and reviewed the past for its actual time. On its pages there were progressively shaped ideas of Vít Obrtel's architectual Neo- constuctivism or "absolut art" theories promoted especially by Václav Navrátil's philosophical essays. The highlight of his work in 30s was an arrangement of the exhibition, in which, among other things, he presented one of the first abstract painting group of artists in Czechoslovakia. After pause forced by War times Kvart was restored in 1945. It again attempted to be independent, open minded modern periodical, which didn't want to be...
Piet Mondrian's Conception of Art
Fořtová, Tereza ; Ševčík, Miloš (advisor) ; Stejskal, Jakub (referee)
Piet Mondrian, one of the most significant representatives of modern abstract art, applied himself, aside from his own art work, to writing of theoretical texts. In his essays, he did not advocate for his own paintings, neither did he manifest any particular art movement. In these texts, one can trace rather general aesthetically-theoretical reflection on art, on the development of our world and on the position of a man in modern society. This thesis introduces Mondrian's comprehensive conception of art in light of aesthetics and the philosophy of art. It touches on the substance and function of art, on artistic means, on the role of an artist and on the meaning of art related to society and its development. The thesis focuses on the bases of Mondrian's theory and its influences. In addition, it presents various ideas of other contemporary avant-garde movements that somehow inspired Mondrian and that, together with his conception of art, create a certain context of the artistic atmosphere of the first half of the 20th century. The thesis draws from Mondrian's original texts that have, in most cases, not been translated into Czech, yet.
